Are there any natural remedies for depression?
i have heard of omega three fatty acids and the b vitamins.
You have heard correctly.
People who eat some fish regularly are sharper and less depressed.
Unfortunately fish are becoming both costly and they are disappearing, like cod (one of my favorites).
If you cannot afford fish more often, you CAN afford fish oil capsules, a daily one. An occasional nip of cod liver oil was a staple from grandmother-of-older-answerer’s point of view. Still available, anyone can buy.
The B-vitamins are a part of most daily vitamin supplements.
The one assisting depression most is B6. But there is an analogous one that works more directly and reliably for depression:
It is called SAMe. s-adenosyl methionine, something like that, thus the abbreviation. For depression you take 400 mgm twice daily. After a month that can be cut back to 400 mgm once daily.
SAMe is NATURAL. The prescription remedies are UNNATURAL and have SIDE EFFECTS, often dangerous. Especially in combination with other unnatural drugs.
So it is good to stick to fish oil, SAMe and natural things which have no dangerous side effects.
Only drawback about SAMe is that it is somewhat pricey for many people. If you cannot afford it, best alternative is to take additional Vitamin B6 along with your regular daily multivitamin.
Other things that work for depression are:
EXERCISE
FINDING GOD (my blog or Q&A helpful)
HOBBY with FRIENDS
BIKING
WORKING at something you like
WORKING with FRIENDS
In fact, the most enjoyable of all times for me has been working with people whom I respect, value and like.
The worst has been working in other places where there are no such people. But I got through a lot of that, having God.
God did not create man to be alone. We all need others in our lives.
In some way. For an old man like me, I am satisfied to help others online.
But you are too young for that to suffice. You will need and will profit from a few good friends.
Become interested in something worthwhile and join a group. Mechanics, woodworking, bird houses, veterinarian assistant, whatever.
Girls seem to be better at this, but as a former medical worker I can also attest they have worse problems with depression.
Men get depressed in work situations where there are no women around (also know from solid experience). I do not know about vice versa, but suspect that may also be true, ask a female prisoner.
So men and women need each other, not just for sex.
Men and women are complementary, like love and wisdom.
So if your hobby or group involves both, that will be significantly better.
But you will improve by finding out more about God in a direct relationship.
My blog and Q&A show how to establish a direct relationship, results from God — not from me. You find out for yourself that way.
And it is REAL, not just being a follower of some minister or just a member of some church.
That is what God wants: A real relationship with you as your Heavenly Father, also through Christ and The Holy Spirit.
You can delve in my Q&A or blog, but you will need to really dive in and work about there.
All in one place, what else could you ask for?
BTW, I did lots of medical work so you can rely on the natural remedies part.
Found God a necessary part of natural remedy while doing years of medical work.
Often the key to really helping, the power by which everything else works at all. Drink more water, too!

I have suffered depression, and taken all the popular anti-depressant medicines, which never helped me at all … some made me worse.
I have found that physical activity - getting real tired doing something constructive: working out in the gym; working out in the garden; ironing clothes, etc. Any thing that makes you physically tired and at the same time pleased with your accomplishment … tnis is the best medicine.

Yes, in my 40+ years of Homeopathic practice based on the natural law "similar cures similar’, I have seen more briliant cures than any other system. Send me the detailed symptoms, including the times and conditions that aggravate and ameliorate and I’ll suggest the most appropriate homeopathic medicine to you. Try to include the origin, cause (if known), other sensations, feelings, etc.

Sam-e has been used with success by a lot of people. It’s an amino acid, and it’s had studies backing it up. St. John’s wort is iffy–sometimes there seems to evidence it works, sometimes there isn’t. I found it helpful, though, when I took it 12 years ago. I just read today about another herb called Rhodiola Rosea that worked in a study.
5-htp is another amino acid that some people have responded to. other amino acids used to treat depression are L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan.
Exercise has been found to be very effective for depression, as well–as good as some drugs for mild to moderate depression. http://www.azcentral.com/health/fitness/articles/0510wsj-exercise10-ON.html
There’s lots of things to try! Sam-e is the one that seems to have the most fans, tho. Good luck and feel better soon!

Read the book, "The Mood Cure." It’s really popular and lists a lot of things that you can take. It also explains why people suffer with depression and why the supplements help.

foods rich in Tryptophan do a brilliant of conquering the blues i reckon.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that’s used by the brain - along with B6, B3 (niacin or niacinamide), and magesium (known as the antistress mineral) - to produce serotonin (the natural feel good drug), a neurotransmitter that carries messages between the brain and one of the body’s biochemical mechanisms of sleep.
The EFA’s in foods rich in omega 3’s such as cold water fishes like tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting are also essential in this process to nourish the neurons that are receiving the messages from the neurotransmitters .
I have found that by eating some description of cold water fishes on a daily basis i manage to keep my moods on an even keel, but everyone is different and you need to work out what works best for you.
The Doctor doesn’t tell you that when you go complaining of depression now does he ………….. he surely should though.
Tryptophan will help induce natural sleep; reduce pain sensitivity; act as a nondrug antidepressant; alleviate migraines; aid in reducing anxiety and tension and help relieve some symptoms of alcohol-related body-chemistry disorders and aid in control of alcoholism.
Best natural food sources of Tryptophan are; cottage cheese, milk, meat, fish, turkey, bananas, dried dates, peanuts and all protein rich foods.
Best natural food sources for magnesium are: leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, cold water fishes such as tuna, sardines, whiting and salmon.
Best natural food sources for vitamin B3 (niacin) are: the white meat of chicken, whole wheat products, roasted peanuts, fish, eggs, avoacadoes, dates, figs and prunes.
Best natural food sources for vitamin B6 are: wheat germ, fish, soybeans, brewer’s yeast, cantaloupe, cabbage, blackstgrap molasses, unmilled rice, eggs, oats, peanuts and walnuts.
Take a good quality multi B complex supplement including all the B’s ie: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 on a daily basis and you will support your body in dealing with the everyday stresses life throws at us. ie: new job, new home, school studies …… the B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune systsem functioning. They are a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither store or produce them, therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer from the side affects.
The whole food source of tryptophan and all other vitamins, minerals amino acids etc…. will always be the most nutritious and easily assimilable form.
Take care of you♥

depression is a disease of civilization, it can have many causes. really you have to identify the source. I’m writing an excruciatingly long paper about it for a human adaptability class. But one of the best things you can do is start working out (if you don’t already), this boosts several hormones, including seratonin which improves your overall mood.

To remedy depression is to have better concentration not less. To get rid of just the symptoms less concentration does work and that is why sometime allapathy meds makes one worse than better cause it isn’t a cure! Try Gingko biloba, Vervain, Gotcha Kola and also get the booklet How to boost your self esteem! Concentrate on the good thinks in life! (when I’m down I do my favourite thing cooking! Admittedly sometimes I cook too much!)! Note Nuts are considered a brain food.. they have more protein for it’s size than fish has for its size.. Also protein from nuts is better cause it’s unrecycled protein.. plant protein
not dead protein!

Regular workouts works wonders on your mood, I agree.
Also, eating healthy.
You might want to look into the trace mineral chromium, it has been researched extensively as a natural anti-depressant.
And look into the amino acid l-tyrosine; it’s another natural remedy to depression.

You have to keep a watch what goes inside your body, as in your stomach and head. You have to balance your life style, and prevent any negative thought to get in your head. The more you’ll be happy and enthusiastic about life the faster you’ll be able to come out of depression. By now you must have realized that I’ve been thur it. It takes a little time you have to work on it.
As for herbs for depression try these, they will elevate your mood.
1. Basil leaves extract along with sage leaves extract is very beneficial in resolving the feeling of depression.
2. Liquorice is a known and very powerful antidepressant. It is especially good in stress relief.
3. You can try this as well Boil 100 gms of Milk Thistle in a cup of water.Strain and drink the filtrate thrice daily.
