Do natural supplements/herbs for anxiety and depression really work?
how effective are these and what are good ones for anxiety and depression??
You first need to figure out what caused your anxiety and depression - two very different diseases. Find a medical doctor that can and will work with you on this. They should also have a reputation for suggesting natural supplements while being able to prescribe a prescription if necessary. That is what I did when I had a hormonal imbalance that caused my depression, along with an extremely stressful time in my life.
My doctor told me to eat plenty of fresh fruits, at least three servings daily, even more if I could. She also told me to get lots of nuts - almonds, walnuts, macadamias, and Brazil nuts. She said the combination of fruit and nuts was "…brain food. Your brain needs food, Lisa." She then told me to get back on the herbal hormonal cream I was using, gave me a prescription for Effexor and some sample of Lunesta to help me sleep. She said to exercise at least 30 minutes daily, even if I just took a walk for 30 minutes. She said if I did this, then I would be off the Effexor within 6 months.
I was off the Effexor within 4 months. (Don't EVER use Effexor as the withdrawals are worse than the side effects!!!) I now use St. John's Wort for depression in the wintertime, as we don't get a lot of sun in Michigan. I also began listening to a music therapy CD that I found at this website: http://www.eaglesnesthemisync.com/Anxiety.html
St. John's Wort helps with depression. Valerian Root helps for sleeplessness. I've used products from Herbs Etc.
http://www.herbsetc.com/Conditions/index.htm to help with sleeplessness and restless sleep for my young daughter with good results, but this company combines the herbs in a very potent formula, not something you would find at Wal-Mart. In fact, anything you can find at Wal-Mart would be a waste of your money. I know. I used to work in the pharmacy department, and the pharmacist would use their products either!!!

They didn't work for me, they just gave me really horrible side effects. I went to the doctor and got put on the real stuff. Its definitely worth it.

Yes, it helped me out a lot. I took St John Wort for my anxiety and it helped. The bad thing is that I always felt sleepy. So during times of stress, I only take it at night before I go to sleep.
Side effects vary from person to person.
Edit: Right now, I drink Arizona Rx Stress Herbal Iced Tea. It has Valerian, chamomile, and vitamin B6 & B12, which all helps with anxiety. Doesn't have caffeine and it won't make you sleepy.
Edit: About St. John Wort- although I felt sleepy, I was happy (not high). I felt like myself because I am usually a happy person. I only had to take it during school. I am in college and it can be stressful.

I don't know about herbs/supplements, but for me personally, changing my diet and things like that work. I eat more white meat and green veggies. It helps my mood so much. Vitmain D is good too.

I tried Kava Kava and St. John's Wart. St. John's Wart didn't work for me, but I was on Kava Kava for 6 months and it worked. I did notice when I finally stop taking the Kava that sounds were sharper and jokes were funnier. I guess it dulled my senses. I take the real stuff (MD prescribed) now and prefer it much more.

There are many herbs (fiber for example!) and natural supplements may work, but I would only consider ones that are approved by the FDA or have considerable research supporting success. I have also had family that continue to move from one supplement to another claiming they work. I question the actual effectiveness because they never stick to anything. I think most scientifically unproven herbs are placebos at best.

St John's Wort is safe and effective for mild to moderate depression. The only side effect it has is it makes some people more prone to sunburns. It doesn't make you sleepy or dopey either.
Considering the side effects and dangers of pharmaceutical antidepressants and antianxiety meds, it's far safer and beneficial to research and try herbal and natural remedies.
Along with some diet and lifestyle changes they are effective and safe.
Vitacost.com has a combination of 5 HTP and St. John's Wort together that is very good.

Try the Chill Pill by Futurebiotics. It has several anti-anxiety herbs in it and is fairly cheap on the internet. Like $5-$8 a bottle.

Best ways to beat depression is Diet, Exercise, and Supplements.
It's essential to get the B-complex vitamins, since they work together to balance proper brain functioning.
Fatty acids, such Omega-6, Omega-3.
Magnesium and herbal extracts such:
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum in Latin) is a long-living plant with yellow flowers. It contains many chemical compounds.
