Has anyone heard of fighting depression through diet or vitamins/minerals/herbs?

I have been going through some mild depression/ ups and downs and I know that I don’t have the best eating habits. I’m looking to address the issue in a more holistic, natural way and I was wondering if anyone had some good advice for me. Are there certain vitamins or herbs I could take? Is there a dietary plan I could follow or explore? Certain foods I should eat or avoid? Are there any good books or resources out there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

St. John’s Wort is used to stabilize mood. There is also SAM-e is alos used for mood support. But I believe the best way s to eat as naturally as possible and get some exercise everyday.
Yoga has been great for me personally. It has really helped my anxiety levels.

Hope this helps!

yes I have matter of fact…one of the things that elevates your mood is good old semi sweet chocolate, the trouble with that particular solution is the weight gain which can cycle you back around to being depressed. i would go to the GNC and ask for information about this, they are generally knowledgeable, and should point you in the right direction. its gotta be better than the prozac I was put on, I hated it, I was not me anymore and you need help to get off it, as apparently there are bad side effects if u just stop taking it.

yah you sure can. i can’t help you terribly much altho i heard st johns wort is good. i think it’s best if people try to address the problem, not cover up the symptoms with pills as doctors tend to do these days and i applaud you for seeking alternative therapy. i’ll tell you after being on prozac, paxil, wellbutrin, etc for too many years - you know how I got off of them ? Medicinal cannabis. Look into it. You dont have to smoke it and the more you know about it, the more you can give yourself an appropriate dose so youre not dingy high - just leveled off - like me.

I have heard vitamin b, st johns wort, calcium. Don’t know if you’re into exercise, but walking does wonders for your mind. Take some music along or just walk and think and solve. Hope you find something!!

The best thing is not regarding food but exercise. If you exercise aerobically for at least 20 minutes each day, you will no longer feel depressed.

I’ve heard St. John’s Wort may be helpful in alleviating mild depression.

You should also do things for yourself- like going out, exercising, taking care of yourself, spending time with friends and family. It’s hard to do these things when you’re depressed, so you may have to force yourself at first.

Excluding serious mental illnesses like bipolar and clinical depression, all cases of mild to moderate depression can be reversed through diet and exercises.
Depending on how you feel (down, anxious, sensitive, unmotivated- or all 4) you can eat various foods and take supplements targeted to re-balance your brain chemistry.
Brain chemistry (neurotransmitters) are made of amino acids, which come from proteins and foods.

    /or
Potatoes Not Prozac (which is mostly geared toward foods as a "therapy" approach)
