Is it possible to naturally cure schizophrenia or severe depression?

I was wondering if it was possible to cure schizophrenia or depression with a natural way? (diet, exercise, etc.)

Please no links to herbal remedies or any of that crap.

Some people have only one serious episode of depression in their lives, and never have another - if you have had only one episode of depression, or two, then you may not need to take meds lifelong. If you have had 3 or more episodes of severe depression, this is the pattern for you, and you will probably need to keep taking meds.

Schizophrenia is always very severe & I don’t think it is possible to have only one episode of it - I think it is always a progressive disorder. However, many people with severe depression with psychosis, or people with bipolar are misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, particularly african americans, and those folks may recover if they only have one or two episodes. My social worker says, on the other hand, it seems like if your mood disorder is so bad you get psychosis, it seems like people never fully recover, so that may be wrong.

Most people with severe depression do have to take meds to stay well, and even then they have some relapses. Exercise always helps. With schizophrenia, I don’t know if exercise helps you stay stable or not, but the meds you take cause a lot of weight gain, so you have to try to exercise as much as you can.

I have bipolar, not major depression or schizophrenia, but I read about mental health issues a lot, and this is the gist of what I’ve picked up. If you are getting county services, see if you can take a free illness management class - things like exercise, having a normal sleep-wake cycle, learning to deal with conflict, setting goals, building relationships - these are all things that help manage your illness if it is severe. Only taking meds won’t do it, to have a good quality of life with one of the above illnesses, you need to take meds AND take as good of care of yourself as you can.

Really, no. You have to go on medication because it’s a chemical imbalance in your brain. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Mild depression can be managed (for some people) with herbal remedies like St. John’s wart or melatonin, but there’s no guarantee. Some people swear by them, others don’t get any relief from them. Schizophrenia is a little bit different because it is that much more severe. It really needs to be controlled with serious antipsychotics

Eat enough fruits and vegetables, and make sure your iron and thyroid levels are where they should be. Nutrition plays a major role in energy levels and bodily function. If something is not right in our bodies it may reflect in our mood. Pay special attention to food intake.

Exercise, especially aerobic raises the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is beneficial for enhancing mood. Many of the prescription drugs on the market increase serotonin levels with medication, whereas exercise does this naturally.

Expand your group of friends. Get close to your family. Join a club or a gym. Go to a class that you enjoy. Meet people. The more friends an individual has the less likely they are to be depressed. It is important to have someone you trust to share your feelings with.

Get involved with something you know you are good at. When you accomplish a goal it will boost your self esteem. This naturally raises your spirits.

Depends on the individual. In other words, depression varies and schizophrenia is another story. There is no either or. Someone has schizophrenia or they have depression. If they have symptoms of both well that is another chapter.
