Are there any Natural Remedies for Depression?
Are there any vitamins/supplements that combat depression? I have been feeling depressed since August for no apparent reason.
B vitamins, SAM-e (sort of expensive, but very effective and quickly), 5-htp (the precursor to serotonin, but the supplement will not give you the side effects of an SSRI), taurine, l-tyrosine. The first 3 I listed are the best.

Saint John’s Wort is an herb that has been used for years. It helps with anxiety and depression. Can be found at Walmart and any large grocery store herbal area. The usual dose is 300mg three times a day. The three times a day is the bummer. But it has been studied and shown effective. Must give it time. One week to lessen anxiety and 1 month for depression.
Hope this helps. If you start feeling any suicidal or homocidal thoughts please see a health professional asap.

There are a number of natural remedies for depression. To a large extent, it depends on the severity and cause of your depression.
One of the simplest remedies is getting enough sunlight. Using a lightbox early in the morning has been researched and shown to be effective for regular depression as well as seasonal affective disorder.
I have personally found that exercise plus some form of relaxation technique to be powerful ways to combat depression.
You said the depression appeared for no apparent reason. You still might help from some form of therapy to find out if there is any subtle or subconscious reason to be feeling depressed.
You can try St. Johns wort for mild to moderate depression. Omega 3 oils is being researched for treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Certain fish, especially salmon, are a good supply of omega 3. If you’re vegetarian, you can take omega 3 capsules, especially flax seed oil. If you google for omega 3, you can find foods that contain lots of omega 3.
Vitamins D and B12 might help, as others have pointed out. There are also amino acids like phenylalanine and tyrosine. You can also take tryptophane or 5-HTP, which can boost the level of serotonin in your brain.
Personally, I would not recommend SAM-e. I belong to a depression support group, and I know loads of people who spent lots of money on SAM-e and were very disappointed. I guess there is a chance it might work for mild depression.
