What is the best way to overcome depression?

i have been suffering from severe depression since i was in middle school. between then and the age of 18, i couldn’t tell you how many suicide attempts i had made. i seemed to be getting better, but now after 2 kids and extemely bad luck with men, money, and family, i feel myself going into the dumps again. i don’t enjoy things like i should, and it hurts to see how happy my kids are and i just feel like i bring them down when i can’t even muster a smile for them. i’ve tried counseling, but that didn’t help. should i try a differrent counselor or should i get put back on meds or something? please help!!

First thing is to find out what kind of depression you have by seeing a Doctor. Then you need to be put on the right kind of medication. Remember too that the medication take some time to start to work, and it is not a total cure. It is there to help. When choosing a Doctor for this, make sure the Doc is willing to sit and listen to what you have to say about how you are feeling and how the medication is helping you and making you feel. Cuz the wrong dose can cause more problems than it can fix. Counseling is good when the medication is helping you. The medication helps you open up. Research the depression that you are diagnosed with, that way you can understand it better and help the path to recovery. And never give up! Never! Cuz the moment you do you will be hurting all the people around you!

Your best source of help is a psychiatrist . You have try and find out what is causing the problem, before you can remedy it.

Depression is one of those darned things that you fix and then it can creep back. The good news is that it really is very treatable. And your kids really need you, so I’m glad you’re looking for a solution.

What I’ve found is that depression creeps back so slowly that you don’t notice it really until you feel like crap. If you feel you need some help to get on track, there’s no shame in meds if they help - and there are a wide variety of meds you can try.

Speak with your doctor to see what might be the best fit for you. Sometimes depression can be situational (a bad break up) but sometimes it’s chemical - like diabetes - and medications are necessary.

You might also want to watch the movie "The Secret" as they have some good suggestions for changing your thinking around. And a good book is called, "if the Buddha got stuck" - that might be a good book for you to read.

Good luck, dear! You’ll find an answer and feel better soon. Just get in and ask for what you need!

I seriously know how you feel, I was just recently very depressed and I have attempted suicide so many times in the past I can’t keep track either. I’m not on any meds and I don’t go to any dr. or therapy. To tell you the truth I just started taking the herb St. Johns Wort and it helped me out a great deal, it helped me think of all the positive things instead of all the negative that was going through my mind. I’ve been finding stuff to do instead of laying around watching tv…I’ve been playing with my nephews and going outside to just walk and enjoy nature. And I’ve actually been doing housework…which is a big thing for me since I RARELY ever do any housework at all lol.

I thought once that life wasn’t worth living but I’ve turned a complete 180…why was life given to you if you were just meant to throw it away by killing yourself? I don’t have a job, no money, I’ve never been in a relationship in my life, but I’m still happy. I keep on thinking about my nephews and my family, saying what would they think of me if I ended up killing myself or being seriously depressed. Anyway, I wish you luck…think positive :)

I totally understand how you are feeling becasue i myself have been through depression. I didnt see a counsellor or take medication.

I am sending you a link to a website where you can ask your questions about your depression. I know it doesnt sound great but after reading positive answers, you might just feel like you have the strength to fight depression.
