what is the best way to overcome depression?

it just really hit me today, and i just started crying for no reason and no matter how much i try, i can’t get over feeling depressed. my momma says that i am too young to be so depressed and that i am just making it up, but i seriously have days that i just don’t want to live. i already attempted suicide when i was 18 and lived through that, and i don’t want to go down that road again. what are some good ways to get out of this slump?

Listen, I will say this honestly, ok. I have been right where you are. It will only get worse. It is real. Not made up. It happens to lots of people. It happens for a number of reasons. Some go way back in your childhood. The only way to get better is to get into serious therapy and take medication. You will improve a lot. Trust me. Get going. This is your life. You have something serious. Get help you can trust. You are old enough to make that call. Try the Samaritans if you can’t think of any other resource. You will be fine. I am. I got moving. I made it. Join me.

I found "manic distraction" worked for me. Get really busy with long-lasting projects, then really proud of your accomplishments and really giggly about your little goofy mistakes along the way. Seriously!

Exercise. When you work out it releases endorphins and makes you feel good and is great for stress. If you don’t want to go to the gym than just do something because doing nothing just makes you more tired and depressed.

Also try and take a good mulit-vitamin every day to make sure you are getting all of you vitamins

first i want to say i know how you are feeling ive been there. second one thing is that you are doing right, right now just by asking for help, do not isolate yourself, i know thats hard to do but just get out and talk to people, it is especially good that you seem to know the signs that helps alot .from my own experiences with depression (mine) after a while i let close friends know of my problem, (when i felt better) and we talked and i told them the signs and they helped me from isolating. also im not sure i can say this but i started taking st. johns wort, from a vitamin store and it helped me. your doing good you already know dont give u, please

There is no "best" way to overcome depression. There is only YOUR way to overcome it.

The traditional methods include: counselling/therapy, medication, exercise, discovering religion/spirituality, find a purpose in life like family/career, doing chairty/volunteer work, finding a partner.

Alcohol, recreational drug use or other self-indulgences tend
not to work in the long run, however wonderful the short term
feelings of pleasure it may bring.

The other big question you should ask is, is your depression due to an existential / philosophical thing - in other words whats the point of life, why are you here, etc and questions along those lines - or more like is life passing you by and your not taking part in life fully - more of a social thing?

A fairly good novel by Nick Hornby called A Long Way Down just came out, dealing exactly with these issues of angst, depression, suicide, etc. Nick Hornby is probably most famous for his novel High Fidelity.
